So in the middle of ch. 4 of The Demon's Lexicon I had a thought

Jun. 7th, 2009 | 12:49 pm
mood: hmm... hmm...

(Because [info]blamebrampton's theory made me think)

If I'm right in my guess the following is SPOILERS for the rest of the book: Potential SPOILERS )

Do NOT tell me if I'm right or wrong as I am reading the book slowly (a chapter every few hrs) to make it last yessss. (Have only read 4 ch.s)

Fandom is drama. Fandom is melodrama. Fandom is high school. [...] Fandom is smarter than you. Fandom is stupider than you. Fandom is five arguments over and over and over again. Fandom is the first time you've ever had them. [...]

Mr. Spock [...] holds the valid belief that he shares a bloodline with Mr. Holmes. The relationship at first seemed easy to explain; While Mr. Spock exhibits the physical characteristics and upbringing of his native planet Vulcan, he is in fact half human. His mother, Amanda (neé Grayson) was American, but the name Grayson is of English extraction.

[...]

[T]he Graysons can only trace their family back as far as Professor Jeremy Grayson of Boston in the year 2045. Spock cannot know, then, that his mother's family tree includes a Holmesian branch. At this point, we have eliminated one possibility: the only other one, that Spock gets his Sherlockian ancestry from his father's side, must by Spock's and Holmes' own rule be true. But this is an audacious possibility, because we know from Spock's World that the marriage between Spock’s father Sarek and Amanda Grayson was the first interracial marriage between human and Vulcan, and that genetic engineering was needed to produce Spock. If Holmes was Spock's ancestor, then, it follows that Holmes was a Vulcan.

--Scott, David M. "Sherlock Holmes: Visitor to a Small Planet"

Not only does Spock descend from Sherlock Holmes, he's related to Dick Grayson, twelve years old >=D Oh wait, actually it's not a good thing to share Nightwing's genes.
Genetic engineering --> Spock ~ Conner Clark Luthor? X-D

On the Attraction of Boys' Love and Androgyny

I'm a Japanophile and have a few Japanese friends in rl, but I'm not Japanese. Just to let you know.
Wanky comments will be deleted =P

Plug at will. Am curious about what other people think.

This post originated as two comments in response to [info]flyingskull’s comment on the Boys' Love genre.

Malfoy hair

Jan. 26th, 2008 | 11:59 pm

Lucius: "I don't understand why you won't use the hair-fluffing charm I taught you."

Draco: "With all due respect, Dad, I look gay enough as it is by virtue of being a Malfoy. Just yesterday someone groped my arse at the Ministry lift!"

Lucius: *is interested* "If you flirt with them, will they give you a promotion, do you think?"

Draco's hair: *threatens to stand up*

Draco: "ARGH!111" *leaves the room with a dramatic robe swirl*

Lucius: "That boy. Wherever did I go wrong? I suppose I should be thankful he washed his hair everyday unlike Severus."

Narcissa: *pats her gay clueless husband*

The conversation that led to above crackfic:

Done with part one (out of three) of "A Snowball's Chance" and GAH this Draco characterization is not working for me >_< I hate writing post-Hogwarts :-( It'll prolly end up at least 6000 words.
Currently tinkering with my Remix assignment.

J.K.R. Advocates Chan

Feb. 24th, 2006 | 11:49 pm

...well, probably not, but she needs an editor BADLY in order to not sound like an idiot in front of her gazillion fans worldwide.

Apparently, according to JKR's spanking new Black Family Tree, those Purebloods start v. v. young.

There are two 13-y.o. fathers:

Pollux Black (1912-1990) fathered Walburga Black (1925-1985) at 13.
Cygnus Black (1938-1992) fathered Bellatrix Black (1951- ) at 13 and Narcissa Black (1955- ) at 17.

...perhaps their wives are a decade older than them? You know, like ancient Chinese practises? rotfl.

Oh, and the HP fandom's a huge incest orgy. The Blacks are related to the Flints, Bulstrodes, McMillans, Crabbes, Potters, Longbottoms, Crouches, Prewetts, Rosiers, Lestranges, Malfoys...

Ooh, ooh, DeathEater!ErnieMcMillan, anyone? I love my Hufflepuff D.E.s :-D

ETAs )

ETA 11:49 p.m.: The line's actually still there, go File, Print, Adobe PDF and you'll see the line between Pollux and Walburga.

Why Slash Attracts Women -- My history of encounters with slash

Feb. 1st, 2006 | 03:36 pm
mood: contemplative contemplative

Dear F-list, please plug this post. I'm curious as to why other women are attracted to slash--it'll be interesting to open my inbox when I finally get a decent Internet connection at my home country ;-)

Disclaimer: This is my own reason for why I read slash. If this generates wank at all, it's going back under F-lock. I won't be able to respond to comments for a few days, as I'm on a long, long plane trip back to my home country, which doesn't have reliable Internet connection.

This was originally an F-locked entry posted on January 12, 2006.

In answer to [info]somigliana’s question: Have you any theories about why slash is rather appealing to women?

There are two levels to slash's appeal to women. First and foremost (let's be honest here), it's p0rn. Involving two men. Which some would argue means double the sexiness. Just like men's kink of lesbian sex. Ahem.

BUT, slash is not just about p0rn. Otherwise, there won't be elaborate romance fics that take a dozen chapters before the characters even kiss. An example is [info]sarahtales's Underwater Light. So this is the second level of slash's appeal: the story. But why does a story exploring the relationship between two men appeals so much to women?

There are many theories/speculations regarding this, and it differs for different cultures and different fandoms. I'll try to address this according to my own history with slash.

Boys' love or 'Shounen-ai' )

Slash in HP fandom )

Brokeback Mountain )

In conclusion (if there is one), there are the p0rn, the story and the subtext. I can’t speak for other women, but what attracts me to slash is the rivalry/obsession/tension thing going on and the idea of the two characters being equals or counterpart to each other. And it took me five pages to draw that conclusion. LOL.

…I’m sure this post can potentially offend some people. And I don’t include those LJ names to start wank or whatever ~_~ The above-mentioned people are my favorite authors in the slice of HP fandom that I’m in. If you think any of them might be offended, I’ll take out their names.

And I’d love input! So, why slash? :-)
