Regarding pr0n and privacy issues
I agree that:

1 a. Fanfic authors have the responsibility to put up warnings.
1 b. Fanfic readers should not act all offended if they choose to ignore those warnings.

2 a. Those who like crossgen might identify with the younger, not the older, of the pairing.
2 b. Those who like dub-con/non-con/rape might identify with the one overpowered, not the aggressor.

3. Non-fandomers will not stumble upon chan unless they specifically look for it.
How many of you even know what "chan" means before becoming part of the HP fandom? (Note: "shota" =/= "chan." More on that some other time.)

*. [info]florahart's replies to this comment are well thought out that you should read them in their entirety.

Customs officials may search laptop or other personal electronic storage devices at the border.
(I'm including as many article links as possible, because the media are inconsistent on Michael Timothy Arnold's age: 44, 45, or 46 y.o.?)
- San Francisco Chronicle
- Law.com
- PC Magazine
- Recent Technology News
- KNBC.com
- La Leva di Archimede
- Daily Breeze
- Reuters

To sum up, leave your laptop at home or clear your folders from pr0n sensitive materials if you're crossing U.S. border. They also may check your USB, CD, DVD, etc.

Granted this M. T. Arnold person was arrested for having real child pr0n, but who knows? Having a bootlegged movie on your laptop might also be cause for prosecution.

I agree wholeheartedly with pretty much everything you wrote about fanfics, ratings and the like. I also read [info]florahart's comments and found myself clapping. She phrased her argument really well and it's great. So thank you for linking me to that. Furthermore I will make sure to clear my lap top of all sensitive materials for future travelling purposes. Thank Merlin I can't carry my desk top around everywhere. I would be in so much trouble. XD!

Also more specifically on the dub-con/non-con/rape aspect of your post. I do definitely agree about people identifying with the one overpowered, not the aggressor. Personally I have written a few stories that fall under that category and I enjoy writing about it. Why? Because I feel it needs to be written about because it happens in real life. In real life I was sexually assaulted by a guy I was dating and I know many other women/men who were as well. When I write dub-con/non-con/rape stories I feel that I am able to work through the emotional/mental/physical problems one experiences during and after going through that. So in that regard writing these types of stories are positive for both writer and reader. Positive for the reader because they are now informed about these kinds of situations. Positive for the writer because the story provides the outlet for their own traumas with it if they dealt with this in real life.

Wow I didn't intend to write this but I did. *spams you* XD!

I use my laptop faar more often than my desktop so most of my current files are in the laptop. Hopefully the law would be struck down by the time I travel outside the U.S. (probably not in another few years). Or, it'll be a good time to back up all my files and reformat my computer anyway ;-)

Thank you for your honesty and openness in sharing this.

In the past, I've used creative writing as a form of self-therapy (not fanfic though). It did feel liberating to be able to share the story to others, even if they don't necessarily know I worked it out of my personal experience (although some of them probably guessed) ;-)
It definitely worked better than stammering through my explanation of my thoughts and feelings, etc. =P

I'm glad you did =) You're free to spam me anytime! X-D

I'm an honest person. What can I say? It's to my detriment sometimes, but I do love it when that honesty comes out in my writing. It makes it feel more real to me and I'm sure others agree. Btw I will in fact spam you again in the near future...like now. XD!

You've managed to wrap up a lot of my opinions very clearly and concisely in this comment, which is a relief, as I'm sure I would have stumbled over it all!

But, to add to it... I choose not to read or write dub-con/non-con/chan/etc, but I will fight for other's rights to read or write it so long as it isn't being glorified. An adult abusing a child (or any other human being) isn't right and it does have lasting effects, so when it is being glorified is when I have a problem with it.

I'm glad I could get thoughts across in a clear and concise manner. I was afraid I was babbling for a minute there.

I like your addition. I'm glad you brought it up and I agree with that addition. I hadn't stated it because I never glorify those situations when I write about them, but I'm sure there are people out there who do. It was an oversight on my part because I was assuming others were like me (and they just aren't).

I think that fics where twelve year old kids are raped - yes, raped, not "deflowered" by adults are wrong, plain and simple. And I've tried to explain why in the past, but I tend to be ignored, so I won't bother.

But I'll say this - it's one thing to write about it. It's another to say it makes you "hot." Because you know what? Finding an image of or a story about a kid having sex with an adult makes you "hot" is pretty damn twisted.

There. I said it.

*Waits for the wankage*

I completely see where you are coming from. There's no need to explain. I agree with you, which is why when I write stories about rape it's happening to someone older (i.e. someone in their late teens, early twenties). Usually I stick with Alicia Spinnet and Miles Bletchley to play out this scenario, but that's just me.
